Work on East End of Telegraph Bridge

The eastern (Pontiac) ramp of the Telegraph Bridge is much steeper than the western (Sylvan Lake) side of the new bridge. Riders on the bridge traveling east will be upon the Old Telegraph Road crossing before they know it.

To create an artificial speed barrier and slow down traffic before riders cross Old Telegraph Road, a split-path "diversion" has been installed near the base of the ramp. In addition, crews have also replaced the larger-grate storm drains with grates that have a much tighter weave. Credit goes to John Balint of Pontiac and the engineers at Hubbell, Roth & Clark for pointing out the issue and making this happen. Thanks!

Bridge Span Complete Over Telegraph Road

The bridge spans have been installed, concrete has been poured along the deck of the bridge -- we're probably less than a month away from the bridge being open to users.

Bridge Construction Moving Along

Progress is being made on the bridge, with the ramps set and the first steel spans in place.

East ramp work will get under way in a couple of weeks to adjust traffic flow -- there is a need to slow down riders before they cross Old Telegraph and continue east on the trail.

Engineers say they are on track to have the bridge open by sometime in June!

Telegraph Bridge Update

Bridge construction is set to resume this week, with preperations made for placing the large steel beams over the spans. Here's the text of the MDOT press release:

Bridging the gap! Clinton River Trail pedestrian overpass construction begins Monday, Feb. 28, in Oakland County

February 22, 2011 – The first phase of a $2 million investment to construct a pedestrian overpass above US-24 (Telegraph Road) may begin as early as Monday, Feb. 28, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The new bridge will be constructed just north of the Orchard Lake Road overpass located at the Sylvan Lake/Pontiac border.

Due to the space limitations, lane closures will be needed on both directions of US-24 until mid-March. Weather permitting, crews will implement single and double-lane closures starting Monday, Feb.28 and lasting until Monday, March 14. Lane closures will begin on southbound US-24 and proceed to northbound US-24 during the latter part of the week.

For southbound US-24, a single lane may be closed weekdays between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. As needed, crews may close an additional southbound lane outside of those peak travel times.

For northbound US-24, a single lane may be closed weekdays from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Two-lane closures are permitted outside of the peak afternoon time period.

In order to safely install steel beams above US-24, full closures are expected on the first two Saturdays in March. On Saturday, March 5, southbound Telegraph Road will be closed, while on Saturday, March 12, northbound US-24 will be closed. The full closures will begin at 7 a.m. and end by 3 p.m. on both days. Detours will direct traffic to Old Telegraph Road.

Pedestrians can expect to enjoy the newly constructed overpass by mid-June. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Some additional work will be done to the bridge ramp on the east (Pontiac) side of the bridge before the project will be complete.

FCRT Open House: January 18, 2011, 7pm

Spring is just around the corner. Well, maybe not, but January is a great time to do those things you don’t have time for when you’re enjoying warmer days.  So, come on out and see what’s happening with the wonderful recreational amenity called the Clinton River Trail, and perhaps you’ll meet a few new friends with similar interests as well.

Friends of the Clinton River Trail invites anyone who walks, runs, bikes, cross country skis, or just drives past the CRT to an Informational Open House on Tuesday, January 18, from 7:00-8:30 PM at the Auburn Hills Community Center.

Attendees will discover the roles CRT and the Friends are playing in improving community health, quality of life, town & county legacies and economic development and growth.  We think you’ll enjoy seeing our photos, banners, videos, presentations, and other materials that all tell a little part of what the CRT offers.  A preview of the Friends’ ongoing “Look and Feel” project will be available as well. We’ll be happy to answer questions and explain the activities of the FCRT. You need not be a resident of one of the five communities the trail traverses (Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Pontiac, and Sylvan Lake) or even a trail user to enjoy the Open House.  And, there will be refreshments to boot!

So, bundle up and come to the Auburn Hills Community Center, 1827 N Squirrel Rd, and start Thinking Spring!

Call 248-652-0954 for more information.

Telegraph Bridge Construction Update

Work on the new bridge over Telegraph Road has ceased for the winter months.Rather than have a partially-spanned bridge over the roadway during the winter, Pontiac has opted to complete the bridge and lay down concrete in the March-April timeframe. FCRT anticipates a formal ribbon-cutting of the new bridge in April or May.

Below are some images of the most recent construction before work stopped.

Telegraph Bridge Groundbreaking

A bridge over Telegraph Road in Pontiac is close to becoming a reality. The project was awared a $2.1 million grant as part of the Stimulus and Recovery Act (also known as ARRA) and was also funded by a grant of about $450,000 by MDOT. The bridge will be 315 feet long and have two spans of 152 and 163 feet. This will eliminate the current diversion from the trail to the Orchard Lake Road bridge and back.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 12, 2010. View photos of the event by clicking here.
